Over the past year, we have heard from Santa Cruz County residents what sustainability means to them. Among other ideas, sustainability relates to a health natural environment, thriving neighborhoods, and a strong local economy. Based on this input, we have renamed the Transit Corridors Plan to better reflect community goals. The new project name is the Sustainable Santa Cruz County Plan. This new name better conveys the broader consideration of sustainability, transportation, and land use in the plan area. We think the new name and “look” of the logo will better reflect the scope of the Plan.
Community Workshop #2: Focus Area Alternatives is coming up in May! Join us to discuss ideas for our future! Help shape a discussion on land use and transportation development in the areas highlighted below. Participate in discussions about the Environment, Economic Development, Growth Patterns, Workforce Housing, Land Use, and Transportation.
The workshop will be repeated three times:
- May 13 at Simpkins Swim Center: 979 17th Ave, Santa Cruz, CA
- May 21 at Santa Cruz Gardens Elementary: 8005 Winkle Ave, Santa Cruz, CA
- May 22 at Mar Vista Elementary: 6860 Soquel Dr, Aptos, CA
Each meeting will start at 6:30 pm.
Dear Community Member,
We are pleased to provide this update on the Transit Corridors Plan For Sustainable Communities in Santa Cruz County.
Following publication of the Existing Conditions Report, the first round of public workshops on the Transit Corridors Plan For Sustainable Communities was held in October and November. Discussions at these meetings focused on the topic of creating a community vision for sustainability in Santa Cruz County, and identifying the elements of sustainability that the participant’s felt were the most important. A summary of the Existing Conditions Report was also presented. Six meetings were held in various locations around the County, with a total attendance of over 100 residents. These gatherings generated a multitude of creative, insightful and varied ideas about sustainability in Santa Cruz and what should be addressed in the Plan. The written materials produced by the participants are posted on the project website along with summaries of the meetings. We are glad so many residents were able to participate.
The next step in this process is combining the input that has been received from the workshops, focus groups, public comment forum on the website and other communication from the public, and distilling it into a set of guiding principles and a vision statement. The principles and the vision will serve as the foundation of the rest of the plan. Draft guiding principles and a draft vision statement will be discussed by the Planning Commission at a study session on Wednesday, December 12. The study session will be combined with the third meeting of the advisory group, and is also the time to discuss four proposed land use and circulation focus areas, which are smaller areas that will receive more detailed land use, design and/or traffic analysis. Though this is a study session and not a public hearing, there will be opportunity for public comment. The materials for the Planning Commission meeting are available here.
Early next year there will be a presentation on the status of the Plan to the Board of Supervisors, which has been tentatively scheduled for January 29, 2013. The Vision and guiding principles will be discussed and finalized at this meeting, which will take the format of a standard public hearing. Following the Board meeting, the project team will move into the next phase of the planning process which will focus on creating land use and design options for the land use and circulation focus areas.
Preparation will begin shortly for the next round of Community Workshops, which will likely take place next spring. At these workshops the public will consider options for land use and design configurations for the focus areas. This exercise will allow the community to evaluate different land use options that support a sustainable community as defined in the Plan vision statement. Once again, we hope that as many residents as possible will participate in these workshops and contribute to the planning process.
If you are interested in attending the Planning Commission study session, it is being held in the 5th floor Board Chambers at 701 Ocean St, Santa Cruz, on Wednesday, December 12, at 6:30 pm. Please watch the website for future plan updates, participate in Open Town Hall, and continue to let us know your ideas, interests and concerns. We hope many of you will join us next spring to dig into the design phase of the Transit Corridors Plan for Sustainable Communities in Santa Cruz County. Please contact me with any questions.
